Development and Alumni Relations Policy

Development and Alumni Relations Policy is an introduction to the policies and procedures of Gifts and Records Management, Information Technology and Support Services, Online Services, Annual Giving, Central DAR, DAR Communications, Corporate and Foundation Relations, and Donor Relations and Events. A quiz follows this presentation.

FERPA training

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act is a federal law and states that all individuals who have access to educational records must adhere to regulations regarding disclosure of educational records. This training is an overview of policies and procedures followed by VCU, and specifically DAR, to adhere to FERPA regulations. A quiz follows this presentation.

DAR Confidentiality Agreement

The Development and Alumni Relations Confidentiality Agreement is a comprehensive agreement that is required for all universitywide DAR staff and other university employees who have access to or receive data from Advancement Services to help ensure that the data is secure and confidential. This is also to ensure compliance with DAR data security policies.

Confidentiality agreements will be notated to the Attribute tab on the employee’s constituent record in RADAR. The process will be renewed annually as an industry best practice, and to maintain familiarity with these important policies.

RADAR Phase One

RADAR is the constituent relationship management tool used by VCU Development and Alumni Relations to manage constituent and membership records. RADAR Phase One is a basic introduction to the CRM database for all users. This online course provides basic navigational and customization components in RADAR so that the user is accustomed to the look and feel of the environment prior to attending the instructor led portion of training. In completing this portion online, the user can practice and play in the training environment at their own pace. A short quiz follows that tests the user’s comprehension . Upon completion of Phase One, the user can sign up for RADAR Phase Two.

RADAR Phase Two

RADAR is the constituent relationship management tool used by VCU Development and Alumni Relations to manage constituent and membership records. RADAR Phase Two is a hands-on instruction of how to navigate in RADAR, locate and manage constituent records, view gifts, review marketing and communications efforts, and navigate in a revenue record. RADAR Phase Two is for everyone who requires access to RADAR. A short quiz follows that tests the user’s comprehension.

Prospect Management training

Prospect Management training teaches VCU development officers and development support staff how to manage their prospect portfolios in RADAR. Development officers will learn how to navigate the moves management path at DAR including discovery, cultivation, solicitation, negotiation and stewardship stages. In addition, portfolio management includes submitting a research request, requesting to have a prospect added or removed from the development officer’s portfolio, adding and managing plans and opportunities on a constituent’s record, navigating the dashboards and generating reports specific to interactions and opportunities. A short quiz follows that tests the user’s comprehension.

Prospect Management is scheduled to coincide within a few days of RADAR Phase Two. RADAR Phase Two is a prerequisite to enrolling in Prospect Management (see prerequisites below).

Talent Management uses Talent@VCU for training registrations. All training offerings are located in Talent, including RADAR, DAR New Employee Training, Prospect Management and DAR-offered professional development opportunities. To access the DAR Training Catalog:

  • Visit Talent@VCU and log in using your VCU eID and password.*
  • Select the “Learning center” tile.
  • In the “Search for learning” bar at the top, type in all or part of the title (use “DAR” to return all DAR offerings).
  • Select the hyperlink for the training.
  • Review the details of the training, then select “Register” to enroll.
