GAS 50th Anniversary FAQs

What is the Gay Alliance of Students 50th Anniversary?

In 2025, we’re starting a yearlong celebration of the movement that led to VCU’s first LGBTQ+ student organization. In the mid-1970s, after being denied student organization status, the VCU Gay Alliance of Students embarked on a two-year legal battle. Their landmark victory in October 1976 gave them official recognition at VCU and paved the way for LGBTQ+ student organizations in five other states.

Nearly 50 years later, we are proud to mark this historic anniversary with events across VCU centering celebration, commemoration, community and a commitment to the welfare of LGBTQ+ individuals and all members of the VCU community.

What is the goal of the events?

All anniversary events are centered around four pillars:

  • Celebration of the LGBTQ+ community’s advocacy and activism, which has paved the way for progress.
  • Valuing community and creating spaces that bring LGBTQ+ people together.
  • Commemoration of the LGBTQ+ individuals who made history and fought to tell their stories accurately and authentically.
  • Commitment to the welfare of LGBTQ+ members of the VCU community.

Why is VCU doing this?

VCU students, faculty, staff and alumni have been at the forefront of progress for LGBTQ+ people, and we want to celebrate that legacy. This anniversary presents a valuable opportunity to share VCU’s LGBTQ+ history. It’s also a chance to create connections and foster dialogue within the VCU community.

We gather to mark this milestone, uplift our community and commit to a future where everyone at VCU feels seen, supported and empowered.

I don’t identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Can I still attend these events?

Yes – all are welcome! The aim of this anniversary celebration is to showcase the ways that LGBTQ+ people and allies have positively impacted VCU’s LGBTQ+ community. The best way to learn about and celebrate this history is to attend an event.

How can I support the LGBTQ+ community at VCU?

VCU has a number of LGBTQ+-focused funds. If you’re interested in supporting this community, these funds are a great place to start.
