Golden Alumni campus building tours

When: First building tour starts at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20
Where: Various locations

Join Golden Alumni and retired faculty for a walking tour of the buildings listed below. Three buildings are close to one another. Each tour will last approximately an hour or less.

You may sign up for any combination of tours. Parking is available in the West Broad Street Deck for an hourly fee; metered street parking is also available.

Tour locations

Time: 9:30 a.m.
Where: STEM Building, 817 W. Franklin St.

Take a tour of the new STEM Building! This six-floor building houses lab, classroom and office space for the College of Humanities and Sciences. Located at the site of the former Franklin Street Gym, the new building features 32 teaching labs; the Math Exchange, an innovative facility for math instruction; a Science Hub, a dedicated space for student/faculty interaction, study groups and specialized support for STEM classes; two 250-seat, team-based learning classrooms; computer labs; and large- and small-capacity flexible classrooms. It also features instructional wet and dry labs and classrooms.


Time: 10:30 a.m.
Where: Scott House, 909 W. Franklin St.

Built in 1911, the Scott House is a three-story Beaux Arts-style mansion that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Acquired by VCU in 2001, it was previously used for events and as office space and was renovated in 2020. The house offers multifunctional space on the main floor and administrative and meeting spaces on the second and third floors.


Time: 11:30 a.m.
Where: Shafer Court Dining, 810 Cathedral Place

Dining has changed dramatically since you were on campus. Take a short tour, have lunch in the Shafer Court Dining Center, and see the variety of cuisine in this all-you-care-to-eat facility.

Cost: $15; must be paid in advance.


After lunch, we will walk to the PULSE bus station a few blocks away on Broad Street and head to the Health Sciences Campus. The PULSE is operated by GRTC and there is no charge to ride.


Time: 1:30 p.m.
Where: The Children’s Hospital at VCU Children’s Tower, 1000 E. Broad St. Enter at Broad Street between 10th and 11th streets.

The Children’s Hospital brings pediatric care under one roof and is Richmond’s new home for pediatric in-patient, emergency and trauma care. Tours depart from the Sky Lobby on level one. No guests under 18 allowed.

At the conclusion of the tour, we will take the PULSE back to campus to the stop in front of the West Broad Street Parking Deck.
