Jay Davenport began his position as vice president for Development and Alumni Relations in September 2017. Before joining VCU, Davenport served as associate vice president of individual giving and campaign management at Wake Forest University.
As VCU’s chief development officer, Davenport leads development and alumni engagement efforts for both the university and VCU Health System. Areas under his purview include advancement services, alumni relations, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, development and alumni communications, donor relations, regional philanthropy and the universitywide development staff.
Davenport has served in several roles at Wake Forest since 2010, including as assistant vice president of college development, assistant vice president of major gifts, and associate vice president and campaign director. Previously, Davenport was director of development and team leader at Rice University and held fundraising positions as a college development director at the University of Memphis College of Business and Wright State University College of Engineering. He began his higher education career as an assistant dean of admissions at Wittenberg University in 1995.
Davenport holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Xavier University and a master's degree in higher education administration from Ball State University.

Henry Davis joined VCU in June 2014 as director of finance and budget.
A licensed CPA in Virginia, Davis spent 10 years as controller at GRTC following by three years as CFO. He was responsible for a $45 million operating budget and a $9 million capital budget.
Davis earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce with a concentration in Accounting from the University of Virginia.

Johnsson joined VCU in 2007 as executive director of external relations and development for the School of Education before taking on his current role in February 2015.
Johnsson brings more than 20 years of fundraising experience and has served volunteer leadership roles as past president of the Virginia Association of Fundraising Executives and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Central Virginia Chapter. His work experience includes senior leadership roles at UMFS and the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg. Johnsson received his Certified Fund Raising Executive credentials in 2004 and is a member of the 2015 Class of Leadership Metro Richmond.
He earned a M.P.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.S. in public administration from James Madison University.
As senior associate vice president for development, Johnsson oversees the areas of principal giving, regional giving and corporate and foundation relations.

Samantha Wheeler Marrs joined VCU in 2000 as director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.
Today, her primary responsibility is to manage the central departments of the division, including donor relations, communications, annual giving, regional philanthropy and corporate and foundation relations.
Her previous experience includes eight years as program associate at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, where she coordinated higher-education grants. She holds degrees from Smith College and Columbia University. She has served as president of a local middle school PTA, chairman of the board of the Virginia Poverty Law Center and secretary/treasurer of the board of VirginiaFIRST, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding STEM activities across the commonwealth.
Douglas W. McCartney, J.D.

McCartney joined VCU in August 2015 as its first executive director of gift planning, bringing more than 21 years of development experience to the university. He previously worked for 10 years at the University of Virginia, first in the UVA Health System development office and then in UVA’s Office of Gift Planning where he supported all schools and units while also serving as liaison to the health system. McCartney played a significant role in UVA reaching its gift planning goal in the university’s recent $3 billion campaign. He joined UVA from Lexis/Nexis, where he was associate director of government relations.
Prior to working in Charlottesville, McCartney was vice president for development and foundation executive director at Wayne State College in Nebraska where he moved after having served as a gubernatorial appointee as chief deputy director of the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. McCartney also previously served as national director of gift planning and deputy executive director of major gifts for a major nonprofit in Virginia Beach, and he practiced law in the Virginia Tidewater area for 10 years before he began his career in gift planning.
He is a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners, the Virginia Gift Planning Council, the Estate Planning Council of Richmond and maintains an active license with the Virginia State Bar. He is a graduate of the O.W. Coburn School of Law (J.D.) and Oral Roberts University, Business Administration and Management (B.S.).

Chris Ritrievi joined VCU in May 2014 as senior associate vice president for campaign leadership and constituency relations.
Ritrievi brings a wealth of leadership and fundraising experience, serving at a number of prestigious universities, including Princeton, Stanford and Michigan State. Most recently, he helped to plan a $1 billion campaign at Indiana University's Bloomington Campus. He holds an M.B.A. from Lehigh University and a bachelor's in economics from Princeton.

Baxter, a long-time VCU employee, started her career in 1987 in university advancement, assisting the executive director of development. Now involved with human resources and personnel activities in central Development and Alumni Relations as personnel administrator, her focus is on position descriptions, posting positions in eJobs, new hire paperwork, timekeeping, contract letters, personnel updates and HR issues and concerns.
